How to Use Newsgroups and Forums

The Scoop on Newsgroups

Newsgroups are electronic message boards that allow you to read postings from others and to post your own comments.  Newsgroups were developed in the late 1970s by Duke University graduate students.  Newsgroups remain primarily text-based forums and are often called Usenet.  Usenet, which stands for User's Network, is the system that hosts most newsgroups.

There are newsgroups for almost any subject you can imagine.  For online learning, there are a number of useful newsgroups for gathering and sharing information.  Some of the newsgroups offering online learning discussions include:

  • alt.education.distance
  • alt.education.distance.teaching
  • misc.education.adult
  • misc.education.multimedia

Online Learning Forum

A good forum for online learning can be found at DegreeInfo.com.  Posting a message is easy.  Just click on 'register' at the top of the page and follow the instructions for free sign up.  The only restriction is that you must be over 13 years of age to use the forum.
